IEC 61508 Safety Instrumented Systems Training

Rowan House Ltd offers a range of training courses that will allow you to familiarise yourself with risk assessment and design of your Safety Instrumented Systems in line with the requirements of IEC61508.

ATEX / DSEAR Awareness Seminar

COURSE: A one day course for Plant & Safety Managers, Electrical, Instrument and Mechanical Supervisors who are involved with the Risk Management / Specification / Installation / Maintenance (& Repair) of systems and equipment associated with Hazardous Areas.

AIM: To provide an overview of DSEAR (ATEX 137) & and the requirements of the Risk Assessment [Explosion Protection Document]. To review from a user’s view the requirements of Equipment and protective systems for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX 95) in relation to equipment certification and labelling.

SIL Assessment

COURSE: A two day workshop for Plant & Safety Managers, Electrical/ Instrument Engineers who are involved with the Risk Management / Specification / Installation / Maintenance of systems providing Risk Reduction to People / Environment associated with operating plant. The importance of this course is that if a SIL requirement assessment is properly on a process then, typically 85% + of everything that is assessed does not require any safety integrity level. This is particularly true where SIL considerations go hand-in-hand with a process designed for safety and engineered to codes of practice. Thus, whenever this aspect of IEC61508 is executed well, both a consistent determination of when a safety loop is required and that safety shutdown systems are correctly specified is achieved. (Life Cycle Phases: BS IEC 61511-1. 1 Clause 8 & 2 Clause 9)

AIM: To provide the 'end user' with the ability to:

  • Enable hazard and risk assessment to people / environment and assets
  • Identify other risk reduction techniques and assessment of their risk reduction
  • Determine if an Instrumented Function is required and its Integrity Level
  • Produce a preliminary Requirements Specification

SIS Design

COURSE: A three / four day workshop for Electrical/ Instrument Engineers who are involved with the design of Safety Instrumented Systems providing Risk Reduction to People / Environment associated with operating plant. This is an important course because achieving the 'life time' SIL requirements of the SIS is achieved by cost effective design that is testable / maintainable.

AIM: To provide the tools to enable the participants to design a Safety Instrumented System that complies with IEC 61508 / IEC 61511 SIL requirements and with maximum plant 'On-Stream ' at a life time economical cost.

SIS Maintenance and Management

COURSE: A two day course for unit Operational Management, Electrical/ Instrument Engineers who are involved with the functional testing and maintenance of Safety Instrumented Systems providing Risk Reduction to People / Environment associated with operating unit. This is an important course because achieving the 'life time' SIL requirements of the SIS is achieved by cost effective maintenance which requires a design that enables the systems to be integrated into management of functional safety.

AIM: To provide the knowledge to enable the participants to specify correctly the functional requirements and to verify the design of Safety Instrumented Systems to ensure it meets the required proof testing and maintenance specification. To provide the knowledge to enable a management of functional safety to be established which includes; proof testing, maintenance, non-conformance reporting and change control which meets the principle of IEC 61508 / IEC 61511 at a life time economical cost.
